Heart of the Bear

“Heart of the Bear” is an addition to Friends of the Frontier that lets CLR frontiersmen share true moments of modern day Frontier Code living frontiersmen. This is a place to share first hand accounts of modern day frontiersmen in action. Have a story about how a frontiersman affected your life? How you saw a frontiersmen set the example? How you saw a frontiersmen really live the code in his/her life? These questions apply to all aspects of life today, not just at CLR.

This section is not a place for “shot outs” and jokes. The FOTF staff desires “Heart of the Bear” to be a solemn section of FOTF which gives frontiersmen a place to say thank you to others through modern day accounts of those frontiersmen who are living the code and walking the walk.

I got my pionner week 6 in 2011 and that was the greatest scouting ecomplishment I've had in scouts so far. Zach Hall helped me so much week 6 on getting my requirements done and he pushed me to be my best. I now understand how fellow scouts should act toward others with friendship. Now I'll pass that knowledge on to other scouts wanting to be in this program. The Frontiersman!GRRRR!

Camp is a place that is very close to my Heart. Friends have come and gone like the camping seasons do, and through camp these bonds have become some of the strongest ties and brothers i have ever known. I want to give a large shout out to my mentor, older brother figure that i never had, and friend: Josh Radcliffe. Throughout the years you have given me soo much support in my daily life that i trust you with anything and go to you just to talk. Thank you for reaching out to that one stinky gross camper in 2004 and including me in your life and the crazy shenaniganz we have been through and whats going to happen to us in the future. I'm happy to say you are my friend for life! Jacob Bignell is another one that has taught me many things and one of those is to never give up on what your heart is seeking. in 2007 when i was going for trapper and made my fire at HA you and I talked for a good hour and a half before closing time about life and it changed my soul! Your such an inspiration to be the best man i can be and you give me hope that great people still are around to give others knowledge and skills to pass on throughout time. Thanks Jacob! Kyle Spiegel: You have been there for about 5 years now but the last three have been pivotal moments in my Life! You have instructed me on how to be a great counselor at camp, in my daily life and how to really care for my friends around me. Getting to know you has been an awesome experience and i hope to continue this friendship! There are so many more people that i can name off the top of my head that have been such a stepping stone in my life: Michael "Cub" Corwin, Matt Sherman, Ike Watson, Mark Howell,Scott Roman, Craig Jahns, Clay Septant, JW Young, Caleb Griffin, Adam Day, Bob, Kevin Filer, Ray Scheirloh, Grant Beeman, Tim Fahey... But this list goes on but I know that these people who have given me a little bit of them is like a giant footprint on my heart. Through these footprints I know that I will never, ever be the same...Thank You Sincerely from the very depths within.

This is a much needed, honest to god note from my heart.... August Heinsen and Adam Day, you two are two men I can say I'm blessed to know. I have never met a more good hearted, driven, strong, honest, friendly, and amazing couple of guys before in my life. You two could take scouting and this program to a whole new level! Not that I'm one to say this, but I can truly say I'm glad when people such as you two are the ones representing the rest of us as Mountain Men. I absolutley am overjoyed knowing that I have such great friends as yourselves. Another man who has probally made the biggest impact on my life in just 6 months of me knowing him, is Clay Septant. Through thick and thin, through bad or worse, through the heat and cold this man still has the heart to keep me as a friend. For that, I can't thank him enough. His friendship is a pricless gem that I shall keep close to my heart forever. Clay just worked his butt of for a scholarship, and got it! That just proves how devoted and strong willed this man is. If someone asked me what the defenition of the word "strong" was, I'd say Clay Septant.

It's funny how random things can get you thinking about camp and the people that you still carry in your heart from camp. This year has been a very interesting year for me: new jobs, completing and returning to an internship with a very fun and challenging nonprofit here in Louisville, starting senior year of college, even my troop changing councils! I have gained new very good friends and lost old friends to moves, conflict, and general lack of keeping up. Especially heavy on my heart thinking back on the year is the loss of friend whom I respected and enjoyed, a great frontiersman and a great person whose zeal and love of life should be a lesson to all. Looking through some old files I found the guide that I wrote half in joke and half for use for quartermasters, and it triggered the nostalgia. I had some good times in my years at camp, and I am thankful for them each day. Many things this year would not have been possible had it not been for this wonderful camp and the amazing people attending it along with the lessons and experience I gained from them. I was not able to make it up to camp this year, time and money were scarce, but I still felt happy in knowing that it was there and people were there enjoying it and experiencing life altering and affecting instances similar to mine. There are so many people to thank for my experiences at camp and for being there for me when times got rough. I just wanted to take the time to thank you all for the ten years I spent attending camp and the five years I spent working with the camp. Despite the magic possessed by the camp itself, it really is the people that make it as special as it is. I hope all of you had a great year and continue having a great year for the rest of it and I hope to make it to camp this summer to visit.

This is my first post so here it goes. Chief Logan means the world to me. Its a place where I can get away from everything and think about the things that matter in life. Also, the staph that was there all of my years as a camper has made me want to come back every year. There have been some amazing people at camp that have made am impact on my life both past and present staff. Some of them are Josh Radcliffe, Cub Corwin, Jason Denheart, Jay Lockard, Ike Watson, Matt Sherman, Joel Filer, Colin Pollock, Jeff Lewis, Mark Howell, Alyse Carter, Adam Shultz,Turtle and Tim Fayhee. All of these people have shown in one way or another what scouting and the frontiersman program are about. Then there is a BURLY man who I look up to the most and am honored to be friends with. Jacob Bignail is that staffer. He has become one of my best friends and has always been there for me. There is no one else with as big of heart as this Mountain Man. Jacob, thank you for everything that you have done for me, the camp, and the program. You have been an amazing Brigade Commander and I`m sure everyone is has happy as i am that your coming back. You have already created huge shoes to fill for the next BC with another year to come.

Thanks to Josh Radcliffe, Radar and Jeff Lewis. These guys helped me out on a side project or two; I really appreciate their help in that. A thank you to Jacob Bignail, for listening to my ramblings on life and frontiersmen stuff. To Jeff again, and Martha for running camp for two amazing summers, and for help making the past two years at CLR my favorite, and for putting up with my ridicules demands for aquatic mammals. Sam Eliason, for helping me learn to cope with life outside camp. To the 2009 waterfront staff; Yoshi, Scott, Sean, Nick, Snoddy, Ike, and Jeff Waechter, for making this summer amazing at waterfront. What a fantastic staff to work with! The greatest WF that I have had the privilege to work with. Ike and Jeff, working with you guys has been completely amazing! Two fantastic years at waterfront with you guys. Working with Ike at camp has been a great experience, I’ve gotten a really great friend out of those two awesome summers together. Troop 94 has been awesome over my years on staff. A fantastic group of friends that I have truly enjoyed and looked forward to seeing each summer. It is so difficult to put into words my gratitude to my friends and fellow CLR staffers. Live The Code. Grrrrr.

i just wanted to thank MMKFI for helping me through all the req. for my first claw. i would also like to thank my dad, Heath Ryan, for enduring the toughness to go do all the requirements with me and to go through the process of getting our first claw with me. it really means a lot that they helped me and without them, i wouldnt have great memories from my 2nd year of chief logan. I love you guys!

I would like to thank Issac Watson for recently helping me out in a hard time of my life. Not too long ago I found out my grandmother has breast cancer. Issac helped me with some emotional support and great advice. Thank You Icky!

I would like to thank the high adventure staff,Alyse,Craig,Francesco, and james.i didn't think i had enough time to get my wilderness survival merit bage out of the way for my trapper.I actually started on Wednesday, and got done on friday.I didn't get to go on the vous, but it didn't matter because i had an awesome time at high adventure, especially on thursday when i was the only camper there. Alyse told me me some great techniques on how to get the fire started, and my three fires took i think 2 and a half days,(stupid twine burning through and not catching)It's always nice to hang out with her, especially on Monday night for the outpost campfire. She told me "it was great hanging out with you" at the closing campfire, and i'll never forget that, that's one of the sweetest compliments i heard at CLR in a while.Next James,he really knew his stuff on wilderness survival, and i learned a lot of things about how to survive out in the middle of nowhere. It was like he had an answer to everything i had a question about.Next Francesco, cloud watching was a blast, especially the upsidedown car cloud, totally awesome. The clip i got from him at the closing campfire is the first thing i've ever gotten on stage as a camper, and it'll go with all my other memories from CLR.The skit i did with Francesco was funny and short, and i'm glad that Alyse liked it,it definently made her grin. Also when the skit was done alyse said that should be a requirement and i agree because it's fun to do.Thursday night when i got my 2 fires done, craig, franc.and alyse were all there and was happy when i got done,it was a long 2 days for 3 fires, and i was so proud that i got those requirements done.Next craig,i didn't spend a lot of time with him at HA,but he did give me advice on how to make the nest, just like alyse, and how much jut'e and how big of a nest to make. Also when to blow on the fire, both in the nest and when i add tender(MORE TINDER)BSI shoutout. Also the story that he told me about people used to have houses where HA is currently was pretty cool.To know that people used to live in a place like CLR in the middle of nowhere, and just take in all that nature and the lake. Finally a shoutout to everyone that knew my name or knew of me,especially campers, who don't play ultimate.everyone makes me feel like family and i'm grateful of that.CLR is the greatest place on earth away from home, and i can't wait to return, but you have to go back to your other life sometime and just reflect on the experiences you had while u were there.

One last thing I forgot to mention in my last comment. Every time I look at my claws, I remember the moment when Alyse presented them to me, the bonds I have with Craig and James, and what Derek said that night at camp fire. It will be hard for someone to tell me to take these off!

Posted By: ColinPollock on 8/6/2009 12:28:33 AM PST
I'd just like to say a few words about a very few people. First of all, my favorite High Adventure director Alyse Carter. She has been a great friend to me and an absolute amazing staff member. She really knows her stuff and you can tell by what she does that CLR and the Frontiersmen really mean a lot to her. I look up to her more then I look up to even my own mother sometimes. She is like my CLR mother, my mother away from home. Next, Adam Shultz. He is a man of great spirit. He has to be the hardest working person I've met in a long time. He took a new job as the BSI director as his second year on staff. If I could choose one word to describe this man, it would be Heart because this man has one of gold. He is hard driven to camp and helping scouters and frontiersman allike. Next, Craig Jahns. I've grown up with Craig and no one else has been a better friend to me than him. He always is there when ever I need someone to talk to about anything, and never says no. He is willing to do anything for anyone as long as it helps them. You are a great man Craig. James Watson, what a kid. When I first met him, I thought he was just any old camper. I was WRONG! He has an amazing potiential to become a great staffer, even better than he already is. He has always stood up for anyone whenever they needed and always known how to cheer someone up. He impressed me a lot when he went through the orienteering corse with a group of scouts who were lost in the camp. He showed the map and compass tricks he knew, and spent 4 hours helping the scouts. He probably made the week for them that week. Lastly, Derek Farmer. Derek, thoes words that you spoke of after the Week 6 Closeing Campfire have stuck on me. "I've never given a bead out before, and this one was from my origional set of MM Claws. I saw you do some remarkable things as a staffer, and want you to continue changing lives of campers at CLR". If I wasn't already balling my eyes out then, that would have made me. That meant a lot to me! My dad used to come to CLR and he is the main reason why I knew you before you actually met me. You are someone who I had not heard more amazing things about. Things you've done for the camp, or things you've done for other people. You are one of my biggest idols at CLR and giving me a bead meant the world to me. Each one of these people have a certain place in my heart. They also all have a certain place on my Trapper Claws. Adam made them and Craig, James, Alyse, and Derek all gave me beads. I love them all and couldn't imagine life without them! Thank you for making CLR as my family calls it 'Paradice on Earth"!

Well, this is my first post on this part of the page so I'm gonna make it count. First of all I would like to let Jay Lockard know that he has always been a great friend and role model to me and he has inspired more than he will ever know. Also in the past few summers my MM boys down at the WaterFront have been the biggest help ever. Thank you Matt Sherman and Isaac Watson. Another guy who I have thankfully become closer with over the past few years is Jeff Lewis. Mostly cause I like his name, but also because he has been a great friend to me and a beacon to help me find a lot of things in my life... especially myself. Thank you, and thank you to countless other friends who have been my friends and I have unfortunately not mentioned here... yet...

I want to thank the 2009 CLR Staff. As I get older (meaning getting closer 18), things have gotten tough with life and at a couple times it didn't seem that I would make it to Logan this year. When I showed up in the parking lot of the camp and our guide came over to help us check in. I knew I was home in the one place for at least one week I could unwind and have some fun. I just wanted you all you know that what you do make a huge difference in the lives of everyone who goes out to that special place.

I can't wait for another great summer and all of the Vou's! Grrrr! I can't wait to come and visit and now that I have completed the Paramedic program I should have time to come work on the camp with you. I miss it! I hope to see all of my friends this year. Good Luck '09 staff! See you soon. p.s. I am on my way to being a RN by next year! Still living the code every day.

There was an AMAZING staff this summer in 2008, and I am so thankful to have been a part of it. Each staff member gave their best, and as a whole it was noticeable. There are two Mountain Men that I want to give a special thank you to; Jacob Bignell and Mark Howell. Both of these men work hard even when there is nothing left to give, and they have the strongest rock as a foundation that any man can have. Gentlemen remember to keep serving the one whom you serve and never stop. Thank you so much you two.

This is for all that came down to help out with the Changehouse, because of you the Alumni Association was able to complete phase one of the Changehouse program. It took about 7 hours to re-shingle the roof. My thanks goes out to Brian Wiley and son, Will Ritenour and son, Roy N, Dana Lockard, Chris Vaughan, Dan Moore and another person from his troop I can quite remember his name and everyone who had donated to make this happen. This is for two mountain men in my troop, Adam Crawford, and Tim Fahey. These guys have always encouraged and supported me in the frontiersman program. I just wanted to thank all of the people that were there to support me in getting my pioneer this year. It was a blast earning it and the vou, even though it was raining the whole time, was a blast. I love the games and songs. It really did make me look at people differently. I never knew a outdoor program could bring such closeness of people. I was truely touched and look forward to sharing my experience with the program and catching me some city slicks. GRRR! Also, I want to thank Jacob Bignell and Jeff Lewis. You two are the ones that I have looked up to for inspiration. Wheither you know it or not, you did. Thank you!

I just want to take the time to thank all those who helped me through some tough times last year at camp. The real world struck me with extreme malice last year, hit me hard and left me on the floor. All of you who helped me in my time in need have my extreme gratitude. My thanks go out to all those who helped me without realizing it or not knowing the situation. All of those who knew the situation and worked hard to help me deserve more than just my thanks, you all know who you are and I hope you relay this message to the people who don't have access to this site who helped me. If it weren't for this group of extremely special and dedicated people, the camp, the program, and all who keep both running and active, it would have been a lot worse than it was, it being hard enough as it was and I would probably not have been where I am today. Thank you all and it is my hope that someday I will be able to help these people who again know who they are whom I owe so much.

Matt Sherman. Never, do I believe, have I ever run across a heart as big as the one driving this man. I have never been around Matt and seen him not being cheerful and enthusiastic for the simple joy of living and being apart of Chief Logan. His humility keeps him in the background most of the time, but he is one of the most passionate and vibrant men I know. It is evident in his interaction with scouts, his love for all that Chief Logan has to offer, his candor with those that cross his path, and the joyous way in which he lives daily.

Jay Lockard and Jacob Bignail where the ones that called me out. after thinking about this summer, this is important because to me jay and jacob are execellent mountian men, ones that i strive to be like. eventhough, it just so happened to be them that where doing the calling out, i still feel humbled to called out by two of my frontiersmen heros. live the code. grrrr

I worked in the dining hall this year. I had probably one the most interesting summers at chief logan reservation out of most anyone. And by interesting it includes unfortunate. But great things come in unwanted places. The frontiersman program is a medium of friendship stronger than any other i have ever seen. Grant Beeman is not only the craziest staff member i know, but he's the most hardworking teacher, he lives the merit badges he teaches. And he shows a respect to not only the out-of doors but to everyone. Thankyou for talking to me and giving me your time grant. Jeff Lewis, while insanely crazy in the dining hall, is one of the most profound men i have come to know at chief logan reservation. Thankyou jeff, for everything, being my director for a year, and my friend the next. Jay lockard...thankyou. Radar...thankyou, and dave mcghee...thankyou. I would also like the to thank Derrick Farmer, for coming up to visit me during the summer from atlanta, and helping out with some behind the scenes stuff. It was a honor to have you give me that time. You haven't gone unappreciated. These are all mountain men who know and live the frontiersman medium.

Here's to Brian "Radar" Dalton. he's the hardest working guy I know and loves camp more than anyone else I can think of. Of course he was the camp director thee last two years, and you saw him working there, but you didn't the behind the scenes work he did prior to camp and while at camp. He truly lived camp for the past tow year, while maintaining a job, a family and friendships in a quality manner. He has the ability to overcome obstacles and make the best of things. He has his heart in the right place for CLR and the Frontiersman program. Just check out the forums to see how he tries to spark ideas, give information, and gather feedback. He's a person that I have complete trust, faith and love in. He's a brother and a friend. His family, wife Laura and daughter Paige, have sacrificed much for him to give to camp. If you only knew how much the Dalton's have contributed to CLR you would just be floored. So thanks to my best friend, Brian "Radar" Dalton, whom I have been so lucky to be associated with and share so many experiences with. You live the CODE and are a true example of friendship.

I want to start of with MM Jeff Lewis. Jeff, those words you spoke to me outside the trading post stuck with me, and really moved me. They truly got me mentally ready for the challengeing events of my MM 'vous. if not for what you said, I'm not sure if I could have done it (MM)this summer. Also I want to thank two guys, MM kyle Spiegel and last and most certainly not least in any way MM Jacob Bignail that have become like brothers to me and really inspired me in the code, and still do. I hope i can grow to be more like them and all my other heros, to numerous to name. Thank You jeff, kyle, jacob and all other frontiersmen that have helped me and inspired men. GRRRRRRR. Live the Code.

I would like to offer a huge thanks to my area director this year, Jeff Lewis and our 2007 Brigade Commander Jay Lockard. I've spent two years getting to know Jeff and from learning from him and becoming his friend I have come to learn that there are few people out there as dedicated and truly inspiring as this man. His heart is truly with camp and doing all that is in his power to make camp the awesome place that it is. There is nothing he wouldn't do to help someone or whenever you simply need someone to talk to, he would never say "no." Jeff is a true Frontiersman as he is always seeking to expand and conquer his own frontiers and do all that he can to help others do the same. This past summer I have also had the priviledge of getting to know Jay and get a better glimpse of how he lives this awesome program. Jay truly has a gift of saying what his heart feels but not stopping at words but rather transfering that into action and a lifestyle. He is truly a man that lives from his heart and a man who strives everyday to become better than he was the day previous. The code is a defining part of his character and you can see that played out by simply watching the way he lives. I am so very thankful and humbled to have had the chance to meet and know both of these men. Thank you so much for all that you've done for me and more importantly for the boys, for the camp, and for the program.

I am so gratefull to the grr program. It brought me so much closer to my friends in so many ways. It has been my third year at CLR, and the vous was my best experience of the three years. I was dissapointed when I found that Tom Ingram wasn't on staff this year. Somehow TI heard word that I was earnin my first claw, and took a day off work to see me. I was so happy to see Tom, and it was all thanks to my claw.

I want to take the time to give thanks to any and all U.S. military veterans that both live now and have fallen for our homes, families, and most importantly our country. I also want to thank all the men and women that are serving now that they will be protected by God's hands throughout every second of their military career, and that everyone in Iraq and overseas would make it home to thier friends and families they risked their lives to protect.

I'd just like to thank Doug Duhl for all the hard work you did in getting the Archery Range turned so that you aren't shooting into the sun!! You managed to do this with out asking for help from those who said they'd be there for you just call...shame on you, but I am so grateful that you are making the archery program at Chief Logan what it should have been. You make my job so much easier. I am really glad that we have to replace traget faces every week. It used to be that we went the whole year without having to do that. Guess that just goes to show have valuable you are to camp. Every Scout who now EARNS his merit badge can really be thankful too. You are a wonderful camp counselor, friend and comrade. It has been a pleasure to work with you. Hope you stay for 20 more years!!!

Dave McGhee... thanks for being you. you followed your heart out west. You love the out-of-doors and every second you get to spend there. The self-reliance you possess in how you got to where you are in your life is amazing. i admire your genuineness, your honesty, and how you are faithful to your friends. Your commitment to CLR via staff, alumni association, and doing whatever it takes to make CLR all that it can be is unmatched. Thanks for loving camp more than yourself. You are living the DREAM in Flagstaff. Enjoy every moment God has given you! I'm thankful for you!

Of all the places that I have visited and seen I would not trade any of them for the times I've shared at Chief Logan. When I take the time to truly just reflect on the time spent there so far, I realize just how thankful I am for those people who have shaped me and given me examples of the man I desire and wish to become. I will never forget my first year at Chief Logan meeting Josh Radcliffe for the first time. Even as a small kid on crutches it was not hard to see the facets of his life which made him such an outstanding character: humility, strength, integrity, and above all...love. Until recently I had not been able to begin to understand what could make a man take this seldom walked path and I am just so thankful for the time and the insight that he has shared with me about it. Josh, you have truly been an example of what it means to live with an untamed spirit and truly embrace the barbarian way! Your life truly follows His example and by doing so you have encouraged me in a way you may never know. Along a this journey stemmed from summers at Chief Logan; I can also never begin to say thank you to the greatest friend i could ever ask for. Josh Garrett is one of those rare men who will do anything and everything he can to help you. It doesn't matter who's watching or what other people may think, he will always do what his heart deems to be right. The dedication that he gives all aspects of his life speaks volumes to his character and i am humbled to be able to walk along-side of him on this journey. I am truly thankful for all that God has done by bringing people into my life, and the way in which He works through these people. Thank you All!!

To Andrew James Garrett: you are my example of an overcomer. The way you have fought to have God give you your identity and your purpose was such a beautiful surrender. Your life is a perfect example of being wild at heart and learning from God and Godly men what it means to be a man. The way you have pursued and treated Chelsey is an example i will strive for but will probably fall short... you have set a mark that any woman desires to experience in her lifetime, but probably few experience what you have given Chelsey. I am proud of you! You truly are the Happy Rider. Jeremiah 17:7-8

This is Matt Sherman and i wanted to send out two thank yous. First to mountian man Robert E. Orr. Rob hired me on to the '05 Aquatics staff. He remembered me from the year before during my Cit for coming down and helping out. i was impressed. Rob made me my trapper claws, exact mirror images to Dane Holts' ( Dane and i got trapper together.) These claws are very important to me. to me, they have become a symbol of the friendships forged at cheif logan reservation. Second, but no less important is Trapper Kyle Spiegel. Kyle and i both where on the '05 and '06 aquatics staff. from spending two summers there, i have picked more than some of his qoutes. kyle is a great staffer, friend and i belive that the code pumps his heart and runs through his veins. when walking down paves, kyle would reach down and pick up the trash left there. he would point out wild edibles to people he would be with. from being aroud kyle so much, his attitude towards the could has rubbed of on me and now i think the code just may run through my veins too. Thank you to Robert and Kyle. Friends are Friends Forever. GRRRRR!

I would like to give a warm shout out to Jacob Bignell, He is my closest friend, especially after sharing a tent this summer. But through learning alot about myself and purpose and getting to know jacob, i' know i've never met anyone in my entire life who works harder than this man, i've never meta more deserving mountain man, and more deserving friend, a more deserving staff member,a and most mportantly a more deserving brother to which i am eternally indebted to, He has taught me more, about leadership and friendship and what chief logan is about. I have never showed him the compassion he deserves. But i am truly honored to have worked on summer camp staff with him, and anyone who gets the chance to meet him pay attention because Jacob Bignell is the ideal scout for everyone I could go on for hours, but thankyou all, and surely thankyou jacob, friends through chunder and sfvealt forever, Gumbo

Kyle Spiegel. I met you when you were a little tyke getting your pioneer in 2000. A little guy with a HUGE heart. 6 years later, both man and heart have grown! You have selflessly given yourself to the CLR spirit and embodied the humility and the generosity that exemplifies what it means to be a CLR staffer... few staffers probably understand the paragon, but the kids always do. because the humble and the generous in spirit are who they flock to. They have flocked to you. You have the heart of the bear! Thanks for caring so much about the boys and giving your heart to CLR.

I want to give another HUGE thanks to the Crum Family and all the other adult leaders in my troop. When I was getting merit badges, the Crums would NEVER LEAVE ME ALONE until I got at least four or five in a week. Now I am really thankful that they did. I missed out on palms, but I do have memories and experiences. I also want to send a special thank you to Nick Crum and Josh Radcliffe for getting me interested in the program. I would never have had the great times that I have had with the Frontiersmen program if it hadn't been for these two. Thank all you Frontiersmen, Leaders, Scouts, Staff, and campers for helping me turn into the person I am today!

I want to give a thank you to two people from the FOTF Staff as well. FOTF has taken a lot of time to code and build on my part, but would be nothing if it wasn't for the vision, the feedback, and the ideals that David Walters and Josh Radcliffe have poured out into this site as well.

Beyond just the site, Josh and David have given me the love, compassion, and friendship which is at the HEART of the CLR Frontiersman program. They are more than Mountain Men, more than Friends, but Brothers that through thick and thin, are always there. This is what being a Frontiersman means to me. This is why I return to camp. Jesus once said: "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13)." The friendship that they have shown makes it easy to share this with the truest of hearts.

I would like to agree with Sergio. This is a great place to talk about camp and stay in touch with your friends from camp. The guys who work on this site have done an absolutely spectacular job in making it into something special. Thank you, Staff of Friends of the Frontier, for creating this great site!

This GGRRRRRRRRR goes out to the Yeti and Josh and anyone else who works on this site! This place is an awsome way to momentarly escape from the "real world" and think about camp. You guys have done a whole bunch of work and i really appreciate it. All the new features are great..... even though i may not post daily, i defenitly use the site daily, it's a wonderful way to keep the spirit of camp alive during the year. thank you very much guys!!!!

Posted By: SergioTostado on 6/3/2005 9:26:10 AM PST
I also want to give a holler to the Crum Family. Throughout my years in scouting, I have always been able to ask help from one of them, whether they were in town or not. They are probably the reason that I have accomplished so much in scouts. I would still be First Class if they had not have pushed me to expect more of myself. They were the ones who introduced me to Chief Logan, so none of you would have probably known me if it wasn't for them. You all can see that as a blessing or a curse. Anyway, thanks for being my light in the dark, Crum Family!

This message goes out to Chris Vaughan who has put a great effort into completing the chapel for the 2005 camp season. Chris's determination and hard work will show for the coming years. I remember Chris as a camper in Troop 10 of Chillicothe, a staff member, Program Director and now he is very active in the Alumni Association. Chris you are a fine example of giving to Chief Logan Reservation. Thank you so very much!! I know you had some help from Dave McGhee and Chris Rhor. They deserve a "Heart of the Bear" hug so consider yourself hugged!! Thank you for putting the CLR Chapel Project first. Our chaplin will be proud!!

Mike Speed, scoutmaster from troop 148 Hilliard, Ohio. I first met Mike in 1999 when he was working on his trapper and i helped him with a few requirements. Mike has always been a great leader to his boys in many ways. First, he's passionate about everything. loves to hike, loves to camp, loves to see boys advance in scouting, loves to see his boys have fun at summer camp, loves to see his boys earn a claw or two. He's always encouraging his boys to do more, go farther, reach for the stars. I've seen this first hand within his troop. I also have seen the way Mike goes after "the lost sheep". it may be only one or two boys leaving his troop for no apparent reason, too busy, social pressure, or whatever; i've seen Mike go after these boys, making every effort to keep them in scouts because Mike believes that Scouting does make a difference and that these boys would regret it later in life. All these things Mike has done with and in his troop when his son was in Scouts, and after his son had left the troop. Mike is also a great friend and family man. He's very dedicated to his family and his friends. I appreciate you Mike. thanks for the love and commitment you've given to your family, your troop, your friends, and CLR. You live the code.

i think i can speak for every person who has ever come to CLR when i say that some one there has impacted our lives in a way that we will never forget.i guess i am lucky because there were three guys that i will never forget the rest of my life, Dan Burris, Josh radcliffe, and the yeti. my first year at CLR there were 2 boys from my troop at camp. our table was out on the porch so the staffers who didn't have a seat came out to sit with us. i think every other meal josh and andy were out there. that year josh was my merit badge counselor for swimming, yes josh was a waterfront staff member at one time. dan was my counselor for wilderness survival. you may not have known it but you three are the reason i stayed in scouts. i always wanted to go back to camp the next year. over the years i have had the chance to go to josh's wedding and share that wonderful muddy moment with him. i had to help push dans car out of the "parking lot" in a shirt and tie, but it was worth it. josh i have made you some huge hawk targets and one day i will be down to throw wtih you. some of my best memories come from laying in the parade field on friday afternoon just talking with you guys (or trying to throw boomerangs). dan now you live five minutes away from me and i see you more and more as time goes on. but above all the camp stuff all of you have helped me with is the spiritual leadership you all display. you are all great men of God and that chalenges me every day i see my claws in my truck. my claws stand not only for the code but for those three men. so dan, andy, and josh, i thank you for all you have done for me and the rest of the program MM Caleb

This Heart of the Bear goes out to Dave McGhee. I met Dave in 1996 as a very young scout. Dave was great, and was someone that truly affected my life. He sent me a post card from Philmont that summer, and I still have it. Most everyone knows Mountain Man Dave, for a memory he’s shared with each one us. Dave is a friend to all. But, the coolest part about Dave is his dedication. Dave has been coming and being a an active part of CLR’s summer camp program for over a decade. He spends any little free time he has, down at camp helping wherever he’s needed. But Dave doesn’t stop spending time at camp come August. He continues to return to camp to help on whatever project is needed. He is dedicated to the program, the alumni association, and to the CODE!! Dave is always seeking the best for CLR, and the campers. Dave, I thank you for all your hard work, your time, and you friendship!!

Old man Roy, if you know him, then consider yourself blessed, He was a great staff member, and is now our quartermaster. He puts in more work than some of us staffers combined, It is amazing to see the man at work. This man is out there every weekend, as well as set up and tear down, making sure that the camp is up and running with the proper equipment, without roy, CLR would be gettting criticism for not having the right amount of equipment in the campsites. And besides being a hardworker, he is one of the most fun people i have had the pleasure of being around, he always has a witty comeback or a joke to lighten the mood, and he has a commanding personality, and he is a dedicated mountain man as well. He is a blessing for this camp.

To Kathy Sheward, also known as Turtle: You have been a major guide and inspiration for me, and the other girls at Chief Logan. My life in and out of scouting has not been the same since we met. I am so glad to have spent time with you these two years at camp, and I was honored to be given your claws as I earned Trapper this year. Seeing you recieve your mountain man has given Sydney, Nina, Amanda and I hope that we can be involved in this program. Thank you for some amazing experiences that I will never forget. Friends are friends forever, and my friendship with you will be longer than that.

Brooks Collier, Tom Kelly, and Ron Julian: a trio of troop 203 scoutmasters and mountain men who selflessly gave themselves to so many boys in troop 203. None of them had a son in the troop during the years i was growing up in the troop. They continually showed up to meetings, summer camps, campouts, and service opportunities to edify the boys. When i was a very young kid in the troop, Mr. Kelly and Mr. Julian were always joyfully teaching skills and pushing boys to excel while maintaining a personal connection with each boy making it easy to have a friendship with them. The quality of their skills and knowledge as scouters and frontiersmen was unmatched. Mr. Collier took over the troop as scoutmaster in 2000 after a long committment as an assistant scoutmaster and led our troop until his retirement in late 2003. Mr. Collier worked so hard to make a difference in the lives of all the boys, but especially a few of our boys who had a tough home life and had a difficult time learning skills, paying attention, and staying interested. His committment to these boys was tiring and frustrating yet i watched as his patience always overcame. Brooks said to me on one occaison when one of the boys left the troop early and did not make it past first class, "i thought we had him, but we've lost one." Brooks, the heart you put into these boys is never lost and never forgotten.

Mr. Kelly, Mr. Julian, Mr. Collier-- i want to say thank you for investing your time in so many young men so selflessly and passionately. True frontiersmen giving themselves to others, teaching and living the scout law, scout oath, and frontier code. Words are not enough, but THANK YOU.
